Five Chairs and a Table
The original idea was to design a “Simple” chair that would be aesthetically pleasing, environmentally correct, use the least amount of material to build, low in cost, easily produced, packaged, distributed & assembled. A premium quality, hardwood plywood with its solid hardwood core, superior machinability and minimal voids met all of the criteria, as the material to use. Once I finished, the chairs asked me for a table, so I gave them one.
•White maple face veneer plywood was selected for its clean aesthetic. The solid hardwood core allowed for a finished exposed edge, expressed as a part of the aesthetic.
•FSC certification fulfilled the requirement as an environmentally correct material.
•Low cost, ease of production & distribution was achieved in its efficient use of material with five chairs able to be cut from a single 4’x 8’ sheet of plywood. The Table required another portion of a 4’ x 8’ sheet of plywood to complete the set.
•The chair’s varied width & nested angular shapes fitting into a compact 18” x 31”x 1.5” flat carton.
•Plywood with a hardwood core allowed for solid brass inserts to be securely imbedded into the end grain allowing for easy assembly using stainless steel hex drive machine screws.
